Located in Duffield, Virginia, the Daniel Boone Wilderness Trail Interpretive Center was built to help visitors explore the history of the Wilderness Road and its role in westward expansion. Built by Quesenberry’s Construction, the commercial facility uses Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) for the roof, combining a traditional wood truss system with a high-performance insulated roof envelope.
ACME fabricated the SIP roof panels to span across the wood trusses and pre-cut them to accommodate two large chimney penetrations. That precision helped reduce onsite cutting and adjustments, while the prefabricated panels allowed crews to move quickly through installation. The SIP roof was installed in just a couple of days, creating a continuous insulated roof system that could then be finished with roofing on the exterior and drywall from inside.
Located about an hour and a half south of ACME’s Radford facility, the center is now part of Natural Tunnel State Park and includes museum and educational spaces surrounded by the Appalachian landscape. The project shows how SIPs can work with conventional wood trusses to simplify roof construction while adding the energy efficiency and continuous insulation of a SIP building envelope.
