Residential
Mountain Home: Riner, VA
Riner, Virginia
Set in the mountains of Riner, Virginia, this home was designed to give two generations of one family their own space while keeping everyone under one roof. Built by ACME’s sister company, Taylor Hollow Construction, the more than 3,000-square-foot home uses Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) for the above-grade walls and roof, including 6 1/2-inch wall panels and 10 1/4-inch roof panels.
One of the home’s defining features is its vaulted ceiling, created with 22-foot SIP roof panels that span the full width of the home without traditional roof trusses. ACME pre-cut and routed the panels at its Radford facility as a Ready-to-Assemble package, reducing onsite cutting while helping the building envelope come together efficiently. The continuous SIP walls and roof also contributed to a blower door result of 0.69 ACH50, demonstrating just how airtight the finished home is.
Combined with geothermal HVAC and a heat pump water heater, the high-performance SIP envelope helps reduce the home’s energy demands while creating a comfortable place designed for long-term family living. The project earned a 2025 SIPA Building Excellence Award in the Classic category.

Why SIPs, Here
- ✓ A tighter building envelope means less energy used to heat and cool it, winter and summer alike.
- ✓ Panels arrive cut to spec and go up fast, so the home was closed in before the weather turned.
- ✓ Less energy used over the life of the home means less carbon produced, for this family and the next one who lives here.
